Rapid Flood Recovery at a Municipal Senior Facility Following River Overflow

Following severe regional flooding in the Milwaukee area, a river adjacent to a municipal senior facility overflowed, expanding hundreds of feet beyond its banks and flowing directly through the building. The entire basement was inundated, with water reaching into the first floor. ATI Restoration contacted the Senior Centers’ Public Works Director in order to provide immediate emergency response, mitigation, and demolition services to stabilize the facility and prevent further damage.

The Challenge

This project presented multiple challenges that required rapid coordination and decisive action. Widespread flooding across the region resulted in power outages, making generators extremely difficult to obtain. The scope of loss was significant, with extensive flooding throughout the basement, kitchen, and recreational areas, requiring four-foot flood cuts and large-scale contents removal.

The Outcome

We completed the project in 18 days, from August 12 through August 29, with zero safety incidents. We quickly stabilized the facility, removed significantly water-damaged materials, and prevented further structural deterioration. Through rapid mobilization, close coordination with public works leadership, and efficient cooperative purchasing, we minimized downtime and delivered a safe, effective recovery for the municipality following a region-wide flooding event.
